Paul sends Timothy back to the Thessalonians to help them to become spiritually mature by strengthening and encouraging them.  As part of this process of spiritual growth we find that Paul gives us a startling insight:  once we are saved we are destined for trials.  This truth is extremely important for God's people to really grasp and deal with.
